Note Following the nationalist revolt spearheaded by Ahmed Arabi in Egypt against the Turks and British community in Egypt in 1882, the orientalist E.H. Palmer was sent on a secret mission by Gladstone's government to dissuade the Arab tribes from joining the rebellion and to secure the Suez Canal from Arab attack. On the journey Palmer was robbed and killed; months later a search journey led by Lt. Haynes succeeded in tracking down the murderers. |
