A fine, large landscape view of the Summer Palace, Peking. Robert Byron spent 2 years in China, 1935-1936, to be close to his friend, Desmond Parsons. There he joined the circle of Western intellectuals led by Harold Acton whom he had known at Oxford. Byron used his time there to start work on his great book, The Road to Oxiana.
Chinese art was much appreciated by Byron who 'started to buy old Chinese paintings, building up a collection of over forty works' (James Knox, Robert Byron, Murray, 2003, page 352).
