Many of the illustrations are of ammonites of the area, which come from the collection of Payan du Moulin or were found at Labedoule. Some of the earlier living specimens, fish, shell fish and ammonites etc. are depicted after illustrations by Picot, Laperouse, Creyn, Knorr and Walch, plus a famous engraving of a sea lion after Juan Fernandes.

Many of the notes regarding specimens recorded and depicted are the work of Professor Charles Lory of Grenoble University (1828-1889) who was a French geologist born in Nantes.

Payan du Moulin was a councillor at the court at Aix and Officer in Charge of Public Instruction. His interests in natural history reflect the intellectual influence of Darwin's On the Origin of Species. As a naturalist, Payan du Moulin was was secretary of the Société de Statistique, des Artes Utiles et des Sciences Naturelles de la Drôme.
