Bernard is an experienced international dealer in rare books and works on paper. He began dealing in rare books in 1979 from a stall in Gray’s Antique Market, moving to Holland Park in 1989 and Mayfair in 1996. He has specialist knowledge primarily in works of Natural History, Travel and Literature, but his years in the rare books sector and his enthusiasm for printed and illustrated books in general make him a formidable font of bibliographic knowledge.
Lucinda is shop manager and travel specialist. She joined Bernard Shapero nearly 27 years ago when he first opened a shop in Holland Park. From 1987 to 1996 she ran The Travellers’ Bookshop in Cecil Court selling both antiquarian and modern books. She has a degree in Art History from UCL and is also a leading authority in folding maps having published “London: A Cartographic History" and contributed to the History of Cartography project.
Julian heads the Travel book department. He has been in the rare book trade for just over 40 years, and his knowledge of rare books and their values expands well beyond works on Travel & Exploration . When not working he is a keen practitioner of Chinese martial arts and is a part-time instructor in Tai-Chi. His other favourite pastime is walking his dog. He holds a law degree from Cambridge University.
Sue Prigmore is Shapero’s antique & traditional prints expert. She has twenty-five years experience within the book and print-trade, with a particular specialism in natural history, topographical and decorative subjects; she works closely with decorators and also with those looking for single items. Sue also has considerable experience in advising on the conservation and framing of prints and original works of art.
Angus has a diverse background in the rare books sector, from the management of a book department for one of London's top gift & luxury retailers, redefining the department as a destination point, to working for one of London's specialist auction houses. He currently shares responsibility for expanding Shapero's Literature section, with an emphasis on literary & children's classics, as well as specific interests in the Arts and Sports.
Tabitha is the Gallery Director of Shapero Modern, our Modern & Contemporary Prints department. Since studying at Christie’s Education she has specialised in sourcing rare and important prints for Bloomsbury Auctions, Bonhams and Marlborough Fine Art. She regularly organises and curates events in our St George St. Gallery, as well as representing Shapero at both the TEFAF Maastricht & New York fall Fairs and Frieze Masters.
Bela Goldenberg Taieb
Bela is the Judaica & Hebraica Specialist for Shapero Rare Books. She has a Bachelor’s degree in Visual Communication Design from Bezalel Academy of Art and Design, Jerusalem, and a Master‘s degree in Art Business from Sotheby’s Institute of Art, London. She is also a practising visual artist and has been working in the creative industries for over a decade. Bela was responsible for our Millennium of Jewish Culture catalogue (2016).
Outside of a short spell in the civil service and the co-running of an online lifestyle magazine in Italy, Roddy has spent most of his working life in the rare books trade. The son of a bookseller specialising in maritime books, Roddy also worked for several years at a leading specialist auction house, where he was for a time head of the book department. He now works alongside Angus Robb, focusing on Modern First Editions and Children's Books.
Jeffrey began his career at Maggs Bros. in 1988 working in the Travel department for nearly 20 years, before moving on to become Managing Director of Heywood Hill in 2008. Subsequently he crossed over into the auction world as Client Strategy Director for Christie’s, working with a wide range of specialist departments across the globe. He joined the Shapero team in 2017 and continues his travels.
Eleanor Moore joined us in February 2018 to take charge of our Russian Department, located on the ground floor of our Mayfair premises. A graduate of University College London, she has lived in Dubai and has travelled & worked in Russia, including time spent on the Siberian Steppes teaching English as a foreign language.
Fresh from the head office of Soho House, Oliver joined us in September 2018. His passion for rare books was ignited at a young age when he inherited his Grandfather’s book collection, and he brings with him a keen interest in Modern First editions. Prior to Soho House Oliver spent some time working as a sous chef in West Sussex and London.
Costanza joined the team at 32 Saint George Street in March 2019. After studying Art Management & Economics in her native Italy, she worked for a series of blue-chip galleries in London before working for one of the world’s major auction houses. As Gallery Manager, Costanza looks after both our modern & contemporary and our historical prints, as well as organising and promoting exhibitions and events in the Gallery.
