Johan Blaeu

Johan Blaeu (1596-1673) was one of the supreme masters of cartography. He was the son of Willem Blaeu who studied for two years under the Danish astronomer Tycho Brahe, before setting himself up in business in Amsterdam about 1596, as engraver, printer and maker of maps, globes and mathematical instruments; from these small beginnings sprang the world-famous productions of the House of Blaeu, which reached their culmination in the Atlas Maior (various editions, early 1660’s), the greatest and finest atlas ever published. With almost 600 maps covering the entire known world, the Atlas Maior was also largest and most expensive book published in the seventeenth century.

In addition, Blaeu also published the Atlas Novus (1635), a collection of Dutch city maps, Toonneel der Steeden (1649), and large wall maps of the continents, etc.
