Richard Burton

Frequently described within his own lifetime as the most interesting figure of the nineteenth century, Burton was one of the greatest explorers to come out of England.  A brilliant, charismatic man, Burton was both scholar and daring adventurer. Fluent in some twenty-nine languages, and with his Mediterranean looks, he was able to pass himself off as a local in many countries in the Middle and Far East thereby gaining an insight into different cultures, something usually denied to travellers.
