Baroness de la Grange earned the title 'Mother of the British Army' when she opened her chateau, 'La Motte aux Bois' in the forest of Nieppe, to the British Army, having earlier shown great sang-froid when the Germans swept through the region. The chateau was used by the British until the end of the Great War, mostly by Allenby and his staff. Allenby, who contributes a short foreword, features heavily in the book.
