  1. First Italian edition; folio (37 x 26 cm), 117 woodcut illustrations (including 10 full-page), woodcut initials, some contemporary ink marginalia of pointing fingers or grotesques of birds, faces, bagpipes etc., upper margin trimmed close, occasionally affecting headlines, some repairs to marginal tears, some slight worming to margins with a few leaves repaired, occasional browning, some light water-staining, mostly towards end, S5 torn and repaired, previous owner's pencil signature inside and another ink inscription on front free endpaper; bound in later vellum-backed boards, spine ruled in gilt with red morocco label, slightly rubbed.

  2. First edition; folio (545 x 390 mm); 61 engraved plates on 54 sheets, many double-page or folding by Bartolozzi, Zucchi and others, subscription list, occasional light spotting; contemporary calf gilt, rebacked, corners repaired, boards rubbed, a very good example; iv, [viii], 33, [i] pp.

  3. Small 4to, [12], 20, [4], 21-980, [4] pp., couple of pages of the Epistle dedicatory with ink splashes (causing minor loss of text), light old browning pages 940-957, pages 951 - 976 intermittently shaved close at head, last leaf with small repairs to inner margin (not affecting text), modern contemporary style blind-stamped calf by Bernard Middleton, overall this is a very pleasing example which opens well throughout, an excellent copy.

  4. Mixed editions (complete), vol. I third, vol. II second & vol. III first; 3 vols, folio (410 x 300mm); engraved title-pages in red black, photographic frontispieces and numerous black & white illustrations, small nick to edges of first few leaves to vol. I and base of p. 314 in vol. III, toning to endpapers, otherwise a near-fine internally; publisher's blue cloth gilt, rubbed and bumped at extremities, usual slight bowing to boards due to weight of text blocks, upper hinge (inside) of vols I & III split but firm, in all, very good.

  5. First edition; 8vo; 1p. advertisement, ink name and small stamp to preliminary pages; contemporary brown cloth, original printed title label to upper cover, hinges reinforced.

  6. 2 vols, 12mo (185 x 115 mm); engraved frontispiece to each vol. and a further 11 plates including 2 folding, mild, marginal corner creases to some leaves, small pinholes to lower corner of p. 156 and one corner chipped to p. 38 in vol. i, printer's error omits pagination of pp. 265 - 268 in vol. ii but text still complete, all in all exceptionally clean and bright; modern half calf over marbled boards gilt, lettering pieces to spines, most attractive; x, [2], 237, [1]; [6], 299, [1] pp.

  7. First edition; large 4to (34.5 x 28 cm); 2pp. subscriber's lists, 48 hand-coloured plates (44 aquatint views by Havell, Stadler, Bluck and others after Westall, Mackenzie, Pugin and others, 4 stipple and line engraved costume plates), some slight offsetting, green silk endpapers, a.e.g.; finely bound in orange morocco, doublures with green silk, boards gilt ruled with floral detail to corners, spine in six parts with raised bands, a little faded, gilt title and tooling, an excellent copy.

  8. Third edition; 4 volumes, folio, 60 colour plates (with captioned tissue-guards) after Shirley Slocombe, numerous black & white plates and illustrations within text, publisher's red cloth gilt, slight fading to spine heads, otherwise fine and bright, original drab printed dust-wrappers, faded with minor defects and soiling, otherwise very good and internally fine.

  9. First edition, 4to, pp. [4], list of plates, 159, 76 handcoloured aquatints including frontispiece, 5 folding, one with short split to fold, later maroon straight-grained morocco gilt, an excellent example.

  10. Four volumes folio (53 x 40.5 cm). Vol. I: pp. iv ('Prefazione' and 'Imprimatur' leaf dated '25 Gennaro 1756' with list of Piranesi's publications verso), pp.(iv) Avviso al publico. 25 Augusto 1756. pp.(ii) Milord. Febbraio 1757.pp.40, pp. xi ('Spiegazione' and 'Osservazioni'), pp.iii ('Indice, O Sia Spiegazione'), pp.iv ('Indice'), pp.iii ('Indice'), pp.(ii) ('Repertorio'). Engraved frontispiece portrait of Piranesi by Polanzani, printed title, engraved double-page dedication plate with text 'Utilitati Publicae' (second state after the removal of 'Lord Charlemont'), Piranesi's text and 44 engraved plates plus 1 map, of which 5 are double-page, 1 large folding plate on two sheets, 2 folding plates on 1 sheet and 30 single page plates with two images;
    Vol. II: engraved title, engraved double-page frontispiece and engraved list of subjects and 60 engraved plates, numbered I - LXIII (including title, frontispiece and list of subjects), of which 44 are double-page and one large double-page folding plate on 2 sheets;
    Vol. III: engraved title and engraved double-page frontispiece and 52 plates, numbered I - LIV (including title and frontispiece), of which 42 are double-page and one large double-page folding plate on 2 sheets (four plates are by Girolamo Rossi and one by an anonymous artist);
    Vol. IV: engraved title, engraved double-page frontispiece and engraved list of subjects and 57 plates.
    Sheet size (double-page): c.725 x 520 mm (or the reverse). Watermarks examined include the shiled with sword and fleur-de-lys (Robison 61), a fleur-de-lys with initials (Robison 20 / 21), a fleur-de-lys within a single circle (Robison 18 / 19) however the majority of those present appear to be the fleur-de-lys within a double circle (Robison 33 / 35).
    Full contemporary polished calf, rebacked, boards with triple-ruled borders and floral corner pieces in gilt, banded spines with gilt tooling and black leather label with gilt title in nine compartments, turn-ins tooled in gilt, marbled endpapers and edges. Repairs to edges and corners. An excellent example.
