Browne arrived at Alexandria in 1792 and explored the antiquities at Siwah, Cairo and Kossier. He then decided to go with the great Sudanese caravan to Darfur, and his was the first European description of the area. He obtained remarkably accurate information on the course of the Nile on his return journey and travelled to England in 1798 via Syria, Asia Minor and Constantinople.

Second edition. 4to., xxxviii, 496 pp., engraved frontispiece after Luigi Mayer, two engraved folding maps (1 with tear), 2 engraved plans (1 folding), contemporary diced calf, old repair to upper joint, joints rubbed, occasional old light damp-staining, a good copy.
