In 1872 Burton accepted a private offer to explore the sulphur mining potential of Iceland. He visited Reykjavik, sailed to Hofsos on the north coast via Stykkisholmar, Isafjordur, and Bordeyri; travelled to the Hekla volcano and the geyser at Reykir; and visited the Myvatn sulphur mines near Reykjahlid via Djupivogr.

First edition, 2 volumes, 8vo., xix, 380; viii, 408pp., half-titles, 2 folding maps, 2 lithographic frontispieces, 9 further engraved plates (light foxing), numerous text illustrations, original blue cloth gilt, double black border to covers, that on front cover enclosing map of Iceland with gilt arms between ornamental designs in black, rear covers stamped in blind, neat repairs to inner joints, corners bumped, a very good set.
