First & only edition. The first and only edition of John Gill's (1697-1771) study of the history of baptism in Abrahamic religion, refuting suggestions that the Christian ceremony was based on the earlier Jewish practice of Mikveh.

Gill, a Reformed Baptist minister learned in Hebrew, was primarily concerned that Jewish authorities like Maimonides were being cited erroneously to uphold the practice of infant baptism. For 'Dr Wall, upon these authorities, has thought fit to premise an account of this Jewish baptism, to his History of Infant-baptism, as serving greatly the cause of it, and as throwing light upon the words of Christ and his apostles, concerning it, and the primitive practice of it; and, animated by such authorities, every puny writer, who does not know his right hand from his left in this matter, takes it up, and swaggers with it' (p.21).
