Cook's narrative of the first Belgian expedition to the Antarctic, under Gerlache de Gomery, was the only first-hand account of the expedition published in English. Among the crew was the young Roald Amundsen on his first expedition, who subsequently wrote admiringly of Cook's 'courage, unfailing hope, endless cheerfulness'.
