First edition; 1 vol. plus a faux-spined portfolio; 4to (258 x 175 mm); title printed in red and black with photographic portrait frontispiece of the author, a further 7 portraits of other generals, 25 sketch maps and 10 folding maps contained in the portfolio; a couple of random spots to text volume, else near-fine, some very light spotting linen backing of first and last map in portfolio, otherwise near-fine again; publisher's maroon cloth boards, letting and Earl Haig's coat of arms in gilt on both, spines dulled, lack small pull-tab to portfolio, upper hinge of text volume cracked but holding, otherwise very good all round.
