An excellent inscribed first edition of these poems straight from Moore's 'sonnetorium'. Moore was a noted psychiatrist, neurologist, researcher, therapist and teacher who garnered fame as a poet & prodigious sonneteer, with an output at one time calculated to be circa 50,000. The inscription reads 'For Harry - These visions I saw once while I was in Southern Seas on the track of my own personal White Whale - inscribed with much admiration Merrill'.

This is also one of the earliest published examples of Edward Gorey's illustrations, a more loose, sketchy form than that which evolved from The Unstrung Harp onwards - but still recognisably Gorey.
