In creating this piece, the artist sought to preserve and revive traditional Persian painting techniques while drawing inspiration from the elegance, craftsmanship, and aesthetic values of the Qajar period. The techniques included the use of candle soot to create delicate shading behind the flower and bird motifs, adding depth and atmosphere to the composition, also the application of a layer of oil to enhance the luminosity of the surface and to help preserve the artwork over time.

For this work, the artist was awarded First Prize in the Iranian Youth Art Competition and received an Honorary Diploma (Diploma of Merit).

Single illuminated painting on paper, tasheer, gouache, watercolour & Persian ink, heightened in gold, 16 x 18cm; framed & glazed.

This work is a hand-painted copy of a highly valuable and historically significant masterpiece of Iranian miniature art. The Qur'an is named as such because of its attribution to Baysunghur (1397-1434 AD), grandson of Timur and son of Shah Rukh; there is contemporary evidence of his having written the monumental inscriptions on the Gowharshad Mosque attesting to this. However, a Qur'an of such immense size obviously necessitated enormous resources, time and calligraphic mastery and it seems unlikely therefore that Baysunghur would have been able to undertake a task of this magnitude himself. It is perhaps more likely that it was written under the patronage of Timur by 'Umar Aqta, a famous calligrapher of the time. Qadi Ahmad's 16th-century treatise on calligraphers mentions a huge Qur'an that was made in Samarqand in the time of Timur by this calligrapher (for more, see David James, After Timur.
