Born in London in 1810, Kinloch joined the Indian Civil Service, becoming a judge in Bengal. He wrote several books including De Zieke Reiziger and The Mutinies in the Bengal Army (1858), as well as two novels following his return to England, where he died in Plymouth in 1893.
The decorative plates include views and people of Batavia, Penang and Singapore.
First edition, 8vo, xii, 139 pp., tinted lithographed pictorial additional title, map of Java, and 23 lithographed views and plates (2 coloured, 21 tinted), short clean marginal tear at page 29-30 (not affecting text), light spotting and dust-soiling, contemporary brown half morocco gilt, marbled sides, top edge gilt, neat repair to head of spine, a very good example.
