The first edition in English of Amelot de La Houssaye's (1634-1706) Histoire du Gouvernement de Venise, translated from the French by Thomas Belasyse, first earl Fauconberg (d.1700) [the son-in-law of Oliver Cromwell]. Le Houssaye was secretary of the embassy of the French court to the Republic of Venice. His critical account of the administration led to his incarceration in the Bastille and the suppression of his work in France.
With bookplate for the Earl of Macclesfield's North Library dated 1860.
