An exceptionally good and complete set of this major literary beacon, this twelve-volume sequence 'traces a colourful group of English acquaintances across a span of many years from 1914 to 1971. The slowly developing narrative centres around life's poignant encounters between friends and lovers who later drift apart and yet keep reencountering each other over numerous unfolding decades as they move through the vicissitudes of marriage, work, aging, and ultimately death.' The Anthony Powell Society.

First editions, first impressions; 12 vols, 8vo (190 x 130 mm); internally all are at least in near-fine if not fine condition; publisher's uniform red cloth bindings with black and gilt lettering-pieces to spines, some a tad rubbed at spine extremities, browning to endpapers of first two titles, slight offsetting to endpapers of third, else hear fine, illustrated dust-jackets mostly credited to 'Broome-Lynn', some chips to corners or bumping to spine ends and a few with toned spines and a few flaps with small creases but, overall a remarkably crisp and near-fine set with none price-clipped; together with a copy of Hilary Spurling's handbook to the series published in 1977.

Provenance

Provenance: Anthony Rota (small gift inscription to him upper free endpaper for first two vols).
