The rarer fourth printing. The first printing to contain the correction on page 51 from 'wept big tears' to 'shed big tears', and the last to feature the illustrations of Mrs. McGregor and the pie, the cover image and two others. Arguably rarer than the first, second and third printings as there were 8250 copies of this printing compared to the 26,220 copies of those identical earlier printings combined.
Banned in 1985 by the Inner London Education Authority for the portrayal of exclusively 'middle-class rabbits'.
First trade edition, fourth printing with 'shed big tears' on page 51; 16mo; colour frontispiece, plain title vignette, 30 colour illustrations, as called for, a couple of very faint marks else near-fine; publisher's brown paper covered boards with fielded illustrative paste-down of Peter Rabbit, plain leaf pattern end-papers, the upper one with short split to hinge but still firm and scattered spotting to verso, overall an impressive example of the jewel in the author's crown.
