Although Dapper (1636-1689) is thought never to have left his native Holland, his publications became well known during his lifetime, and this work was later translated into French in 1703. The work is notable for its fine plates, some after Coronelli. Maps include the Bay of Lepanto and other locations in this theatre of war between Venice and the Ottoman Empire.
First (only) edition, folio (31.4 x 20 cm.), title printed in red and black, additional engraved title, 3 folding maps, 8 double-page plates and maps, 6 single-page plates, illustrations in the text, contemporary calf, gilt stamp on upper cover 'Military Depot' with Royal Arms of the United Kingdom, Zante plate bound upside down, rebacked retaining original spine, a very good copy.
