The first edition, first state of Isaac Ware's (d.1766) A Complete Body of Architecture, with the engraved title vignette of the Pantheon by Henry Roberts. The work is richly illustrated with 114 plates, including folding plans and engravings by the author himself.

A member of Lord Burlington's inner circle, Ware's output as an architect was standardly Palladian in character. However, his close association with rococo artists such as Hogarth, Roubiliac, and Francis Hayman through their membership of the St. Martin's Lane Academy introduced an uncharacteristic freedom into many of the designs Ware included in the Complete Body. Expressing this middle of the way approach, Ware cautioned readers at the end of Book II that 'Palladio is oftener in the right than any man, and let that be esteemed sufficient praised : no man is always' (p.271).

With provenance for the manufacturer and founder of the Soho Mint Matthew Boulton (1728-1809).

First edition, first state of plates; folio (42 x 26.5 cm); bookplate to front pastedown, engraved frontispiece, vignette title in red and black, 114 engraved plates including folding plans (as called for by Fowler, the table of plates pp.[8-10] being erroneous), with slip explaining plate 3 in further detail, note to plates XII and XIII bound after p.120 rather than p.116; contemporary blind-tooled calf, ruled in gilt, contrasting red and gilt title-piece to spine, joints cracked but holding, extremities rubbed; [18], 92, [2], 93-120, [4], 121-748, [4]pp.
