Epicurus taught that philosophy's purpose is to obtain ultimate happiness (eudaimonia) free from physical pain and mental distress. As such, Epicureanism was condemned as a form of hedonism in the middle ages, and Epicurus considered a patron of gluttony, drunkenness and vice.
