John MacGowan (1835–1922) was an Irish born Missionary for the London Missionary Society in Amoy (Xiamen). He wrote several other books on China, including ones on the local Amoy (Xiamen) dialect (one of the Southern Min dialects), and was a founder of the Natural Foot Society.
First edition; 8vo (22.5 x 15 cm); 77 photographic illustrations, prize book plate to pastedown, touch of spotting to frontispiece and title, and occasionally elsewhere; publisher's green gilt pictorial cloth, little rubbing to extremities, head of spine a little worn, a very good copy; 320pp.
