The curriculum in her schools differed from that of most peer institutions by including mathematics and science as suitable subjects for girls' (Ogilvie, Biographical Dictionary of Women in Science, p. 198). A Compendious System of Astronomy was Bryan's first book, and it earned her the praise of Charles Hutton, Fellow of the Royal Society and professor mathematics at Woolwich Royal Military Academy.
