Published at a particularly interesting time in the history of south africa. In January 1906 the pro-Boer Liberal Party came to power in Britain with a new policy for the two former Boer colonies of the Transvaal and the Orange River: self-rule. By 1908 Boers were in control of Natal and both the Orange River and Transvaal Colonies and with the aim of uniting the country under one government Jan Smuts proposed a gathering of representatives from all four colonies to decide on the next step. By August 1909 the South Africa Act passed through the House of Commons and on 31 May 1910 the Union of South Africa was born, a self-governing dominion of the British Empire.
