This resulted in a legal wrangle where Pigot tried to reinstate the lands of the Rajah of Tanjore without approval. He refused to sign documents in several highly strung meetings, and was eventually arrested by Brigadier-General James Stuart as ordered of a majority of the council, and died in captivity in 1777.
