Illustrated Guide Book for Travellers round the World.[In Japanese]

Round the world in Japanese. This highly unusual set of guide-books were designed for the Japanese traveller. Each volume covers a different part of the world.

Listed below are some of the cities and countries covered in each volume:

1) San Francisco, Chicago, Tokyo and Rio de Janeiro.
2) London, Manchester, Dublin, Edinburgh and Spain. ( this volume contains a moveable "hour" clock for telling the time in different cities)
3) Arctic, Iceland, Ste Petersburg, Constantinople, Italy and Switzerland.
4) Burma, India and China.
5) France, Holland and Germany.
6) Greece, Persia, India, Ceylon.
7) Egypt, South Africa and Australia.

Unlike many other guides these volumes are also profusely illustrated with beautiful etched views, some full page and some folding, in a Western influenced style, although the pages still bound in sheets as is customary in the Eastern tradition.

This set is extremely rare as there are no copies of this title represented in any library noted at OCLC, KVK, COPAC, BL, H, Big Ten, Mirlyn, Melvyl, Yale, LC, NYP, Stanford or no copies have appeared at auction. It is also rare to find such a set with the original wooden travelling case, virtually intact and also very rare to find the world map in original covers.

Complete set. 7 vols and one coloured lithographed fold out map of the world in Japanese ( with original covers) ; 8vo (15 x 10 cms), each with engraved title-page in English and Japanese, almost every page is illustrated with a topographical view ( most captioned in English), some full-page, all other text in Japanese; all bound in contemporary chromolithographed pictorial boards,marbled endpapers, one volume rebacked in new cloth spine, slight wear to all boards; all housed in its original wooden box, with removeable lid; an excellent set.
