Combining a profound affection for Germany with a sharp critique of its social and political climate in the late 1920s, Tucholsky used satire and incisive commentary to challenge militarism, nationalism, and growing anti-democratic tendencies. Above all, he warned of the rising threat posed by the Nazi movement and the danger it represented to German democracy.

His warnings proved tragically prophetic when Adolf Hitler came to power in 1933. Soon thereafter, Tucholsky's books were among the first to be denounced as 'un-German,' and were banned and burned by the Nazi regime. Tucholsky himself became one of the first authors to have his German citizenship revoked.

First edition (1 - 20 tausend); 8vo (234 x 183 mm); black & white photographs, top edge red, slightly faded, light toning to pages, occasional marks and light wear; tan endpapers, hinges split, yellow cloth-covered boards, titles in black, reproduction of Heartzfield's photomontage mounted on upper side, light spotting, wear to extremities, ownership note on title-page dated Aug 1929, a very good copy; 236pp.

Fotografia Pública pp116-117; The Open Book pp76-77; 802 photo books from the M. + M.
