Ishimoto Yasuhiro was born in San Francisco in 1921, and he moved with his family to Japan at the age of three. After graduating high school, he returned to San Francisco to study. A year later, as a result of the war, he was sent to an internment camp in Colorado for Japanese citizens and those of Japanese descent. It was here that his interest in photography began. After the war, Ishimoto went to Chicago and studied at the Institute of Design under Harry Callahan and Aaron Siskind. He graduated in 1952 and returned to Japan the following year, although he continued to travel between the two countries. Chicago, Chicago was published in the year that he was granted Japanese citizenship.

Ishimoto took these photographs of architectural views, beach and street scenes, and portraits in the late 1950s and early '60s, which clearly reflect his formal training at the Chicago Institute of Design. Harry Callahan writes in his foreword that Ishimoto 'has made us see more intensely our Chicago and his concern for life everywhere.'
