Emil Sigmund Fischer (1865-1945), was a banker and traveller, born in Vienna. He travelled to China in 1894 and worked as a banker in Shanghai, later in Tienstin. He wrote several books on China besides this one. He was held prisoner by the Japanese from 1941 until his death.

There were only two editions of this unusual guide, the first was published in 1909 and this one in 1924. Both editions are scarce.

Second edition. 8vo ( 20 x 14 cm) ; pp. ix, (ii), 237, xii, adverts, numerous maps and plans, some folding, some coloured, large folding 'Plan of Peking' printed in colour in rear pocket with an extra map of Angkor inserted loose, publisher's addendum slip tipped in before title-page, pages 16-19 detached, ink inscription inside on front free endpaper ,; publisher's original decorated boards, lacks spine; overall a good copy.
