Ferrier was Adjutant-General of the Persian army. Travelling extensively from Iran across Afghanistan and Central Asia into India, he developed a masterly knowledge of the history, geography, and languages of the area. The book concentrates on the period 1700 to 1850, and is critical of British policy.
