Illustrated by Frank Budgen. First edition of Frank Budgen's memoir James Joyce and the Making of Ulysses with a portrait of James Joyce and four drawings to Ulysses by the author. Budgen produced several portraits of Joyce; one from 1919 is held by the National Gallery of Ireland and has been used as the frontispiece of this 1934 memoir.

In Zurich in 1918 and 1919, the English painter Frank Budgen and author James Joyce met almost daily to walk, talk and drink wine. During these meetings they discussed Ulysses, the novel Joyce was then writing. This book is a record of these conversations and a critical commentary on the work itself.

The quotation written in pencil on the verso of the front free endpaper reads 'The foul chaos of Ulysses / Edmund Gosse'. This was taken from Gosse's review of Les Liaisons Dangereuses in the Sunday Times on 4 January 1925, 'An age which has tolerated the brutality of La garçonne and the foul chaos of Ulysses must not make itself ridiculous by throwing stones at Les Liaisons Dangereuses.'

First edition, first impression; 8vo; five black-and-white illustrations by the author, half-title, hand-written quotation on front free endpaper, scattered light foxing, occasional toning, blue endpapers; publisher's quarter cream cloth on blue paper-backed boards, title lettered in dark blue on a blue ground, spine slightly soiled, boards slightly sunned, unclipped dustjacket (restored), spine and top edge of dustjacket sunned, otherwise in good condition, overall a very good copy; 320pp.
