'George Meredith (1828-1909), a favourite novelist of F[rancis] M[eynell]'s parents, was also a poet and critic. He was a close friend of the Meynell family, and a great admirer of Alice Meynell (1847-1922) to whom he wrote sonnets' (McKitterick, p176).
