Two large alternative designs for the title-page of W.A. Propert's book 'The Russian Ballet in Western Europe', published in 1921.

As artist in residence for Diaghilev's Ballets Russes there was no one more suitable to design the illustrations for this early monograph on Russian ballet and its collaborators. Propert writes in his introduction that he was incredibly glad and fortunate to have Goncharova on board with the book and willing to contribute towards it.

These original watercolours are testament to the Russian artist's astonishing variety of work she produced, crossing the boundaries between designer, illustrator, painter and print-maker. The floral and feather motifs are seen in the final design for the title-page, along with aspects of the typography. It is therefore a unique opportunity to see creative process of the artist and witness how she blended various ideas into the final composition.
