The victims were Capt. Arthur Conolly and Lt. Col. Charles Stoddart. This work was intended to draw attention to their plight and speculate as to their fate, which Rev. Joseph Wolff went to Bokhara to discover. In fact both had been executed by the Emir as spies. In the preface, Grover anticipates Wolff's imminent return, the Stoddart and Conolly committee having been 'most anxious' about him since his departure.
