Based on Henry James's 1880 novel Washington Square, The Heiress was first staged in London in 1949, directed by John Gielgud at the Theatre Royal, Haymarket, and starring Ralph Richardson as Dr Sloper and Peggy Ashcroft as his daughter, Catherine.
