'Shrine to the whole nation but home to one family - that is the White House.'

Margot Fonteyn later wrote in her biography 'The Royal Ballet tour did not include Washington that year but Jacqueline Kennedy invited us to make a special visit. A private plane took Fred [Ashton], Michael [Somes], our conductor John Lanchberry, Rudolf [Nureyev] and me to tea at White House. Jackie was almost fay with the breathless voice and those wide set eyes except that I found a great warmth mingled with her manner of seeming that she should be first lady'.
