An uncommon account. M'Queen, the owner of plantations in Grenada in the West Indies, collected extensive information, principally from slaves but also from a study of Arab geographers, which led him correctly to the conclusion that the Niger ended in the great delta of the Blight of Benin. Not being a member of the geographical establishment, little notice was taken of his account at the time and many bizarre theories were put forward before M'Queen's thesis was accepted.

First edition. 8vo., xx, 288pp., 16 pages ads dated June 1st 1891 at end, large folding map(offset, short tear at fold), uncut in modern straight-grained calf gilt, a very good copy.

Provenance

Provenance: Edward Pease (inscription to front free endpaper (possibly the founder of the Stockton-Darlington Railway and often referred to as the "Father of the Railways").
