The ink inscription by Gielgud reads 'Dear Sydney. I am so very sorry to hear you are not well - and hope you may care to glance at this to remind you of some theatre nights - Ever yours John Gielgud.' The loosely inserted programme is a rare survival of Gielgud's production of Hamlet, June 29th - July 1st 1939, in which he played the eponymous role and directed the play with a star-studded cast of the day, including Fay Compton, Glen Byam Shaw, Harry Andrews, Andrew Cruikshank, Marius Goring, etc. This production was a 'preview' prior to transferring to Kronberg Castle, Elisonore, Denmark, an open-air production.

The programme is all the more significant because it was supposed to be a Farewell to the Lyceum Theatre, which the London County Council had just purchased, with plans to demolish it to make room for road improvement. The theatre closed that year

First edition, presentation inscription by Gielgud to half-title; 4to; numerous illustrations from photographs; publisher's blue cloth gilt, faded at top and bottom edges, illustrated endpapers of 'leading ladies', mild crease to upper free one, pictorial dust-jacket, chipped, worn and creased, closed tear to rear panel but the inscription inside more than compensates for a less than perfect dust-jacket; together with a theatre programme for John Gielgud's production of Hamlet at the Lyceum Theatre, London; cream wrappers, printed in gold, red and black, toned and dust-soiled but sound and remarkably sound and complete; [2] xxiii [2]pp.
