John Martin-Leake was born in 1739. He was the son of Stephen Martin-Leake and Anne Powell. He died in April 1836. He held the office of Chester Herald between 1752 and 1791. He was a Treasury official.

Born in 1806, Marquis de Bassano was a French artist known for his photographs of urban landscape. He died in 1889.

Two volumes folio (34.2 x 22.2 cm). Engraved frontispiece by Picart, engraved portrait of the author by G. Valck after G. Kneller, [8] including half-title, title, dedication and preface, 252 pp., with 3 folding engraved maps, 9 folding, 29 double-page and 18 full-page engraved plates, 24 engravings in text and a large engraved head-piece; title, 253-468 pp. including table, with 7 folding, 25 double-page and 28 full-page engraved plates, and 20 engravings in text -- in all a frontispiece, a portrait plate, 3 engr. maps, 116 plates and 44 engr. in text, many plates showing several subjects: 262 numbered subjects, to which are added 5 pl. between pp. 106-127; occasional light spotting, without the last leaf of indications to binder as often. Contemporary speckled calf, new spines to style with raised bands gilt in compartments, brown morocco labels lettered in gilt; a bit rubbed, corners repaired.
