Waxel (1776-1816), a Russian Imperial Councillor and member of a few scientific academies in St. Petersburg and Berlin, travelled in the southern part of the Sea of Azov (Crimea and the north coast of the Black Sea) in 1797 and 1798. He discovered there and drawn numerous ancient artifacts, such as sculptures, inscriptions and coins, mostly from the period of Greek colonization. 66 items are here engraved and commented in French and German.
