'Roberts recounts in swashbuckling fashion a vivid memoir ranging from plunging calvalry charges while a young lieutenant to high level policy decisions as Field Marshall.' (Riddick). Roberts was deeply involved in the Indian Mutiny of 1857, the recapture of Delhi, lifting the Siege of Lucknow, and retaking Oudh. He also commanded the principal British force in the Afghan War of 1879-80, and the successful march on Kandahar.

fine; mid-twentieth century full tree calf, gilt panelled, tooled spine panels corresponding lettering-pieces, marbled endpapers and matching edges, a superbly bound set.
