The wartime exploits of Montgomery were well documented in his memoirs and number of biographies. A brief summary is difficult but he was born in 1887, in London, trained at Sandhurst and was commissioned into Royal Warwickshire Regiment in 1908. In Word War II he gained renown as the best British field commander since Wellington. He commanded the 8th Army in N. Africa and defeated Rommel at Alamein (1942). He led the advance through Sicily and Italy (1943) and was appointed Commander-in-Chief ground forces in N.W. Germany, The Netherlands and Denmark surrendered to him on Lunenburg Heath. He was appointed Field Marshal (1944). Chief of the Imperial General Staff (194608) and Deputy Supreme Commander of NATO (1951-58)
