Bourne (1834-1912) took up photography at the age of twenty-four in 1858. In 1862 he made a trip to India and went into a partnership with Charles Shepherd who already had a photographic studio in Simla. Bourne spent ten years in India carrying his camera to almost every province. As well as taking some striking portraits of Maharajah's and topographical views, Bourne made three trips to the Himalayas, these expeditions alone assuring him a place in photographic history.
