Very rare first edition of the only book by the 'Ukrainian Krylov'. Not in WorldCat or Copac.

Akim Nakhimov (1782-1814) was born near the city of Kharkiv and returned there after a brief stint as an official in St. Petersburg. Well educated and fluent in French, German, English and Latin, he taught poetry, grammar and rhetoric at Kharkiv University before retiring to his family estate in 1811 and dedicating himself to literature. His popular poems and fables satirised bureaucracy, corruption and the Russian nobility's obsession with French 'high culture.'

Nakhimov published very little during his lifetime, and the few pieces that he did publish appeared only in periodicals. His first book was only published after his death through the efforts of his fellow Kharkiv satirist and fabulist, Vasilii Maslovich (1792-1841). The book was well received and was followed by 5 further editions (published in 1816, 1822, 1841, 1842 and 1852).
