During the time of the First Temple the Eastern Gate (also called Shushan or HaKohan gate) was the main entrance into the Temple Mount area. It was also the gate that Jesus entered on a humble donkey in his triumphal entry. The gate has been sealed since the 1600's and legend has it that the Messiah will pass through this gate.
