A record of Versailles as completed for the Sun King: Louis XIV. A collection of plans and views of the Palace of Versailles, made between 1714 and 1715 shortly before Louis XIV's death; providing a record of the palace and gardens in their most complete state. Millard describes the engravings as 'superb engravings of the Versailles chapel [which] is the chief among Pierre Le Pautre's extensive and excellent oeuvre' (p.362).
Folio (50 x 37 cm); engraved title page and privilege, 63 plates of which 38 are double-page or folding (lacking plates 5 and 6), lower edge of some leaves restored, traces of dampstaining to lower margin; contemporary marbled calf, spine gilt in compartments, gilt lettering to spine, boards slightly worn, corners rubbed, marbled endpapers, a very good example.
