Fifty-sixth thousand.
London, John Murray, 1899
The sixth edition of On the Origin of Species, initially appearing in 1872, was the first in which the word evolution occurs (following its use in The Descent of Man in 1871) and is considered the final edition of Darwin's lifetime. As with previous editions, it was extensively revised by the author and a new chapter was added to refute the views of the Roman Catholic biologist St. George Mivart. Other changes were made to increase its appeal to the general public, including shortening the title by removing 'On' and the use of smaller type to reduce the volume's size.
Sixth edition (fifty-sixth thousand); 8vo; folding diagram, single leaf of undated publisher's ads at rear, a few small pencil notes and marks, paper pass to fish or fowl on a moor in 1903 loosely inserted, spotting to early and late leaves and to edges of text block, as often, contents faintly toned; original green cloth, titles to spine gilt, boards blocked in blind, upper corner bumped but otherwise binding fresh and bright, very good condition.
