This set was awarded to Ernest Alfred Elkington as a senior prize in internal medicine at the Birmingham General Hospital for the 1870-71 school year. Elkington was the son and grandson of physicians, and after finishing his undergraduate medical education at Birmingham he studied in London and then Edinburgh under Joseph Lister, with whom he became close. He went on to have a distinguished medical and philanthropic career in Newport, Shropshire, advocating for reform of the water and sewage system and serving as a government and Red Cross medical officer (obituary, The British Medical Journal, December 5, 1936).
