George Sale (1697–1736) was a British orientalist and lawyer. His translation of the Qur'an, first printed in 1734, was the first of it's kind to have been translated into English directly from Arabic and has since become a landmark text in Qur'anic studies. This new edition includes a large folding frontispiece of the plan of the temple of Mecca (provided as two views), three genealogical tables (the tribes of Koreish and other Arab tribes), and a large folding map of the Arabian peninsula.
